Lichens

Lichens are one of my personal favourite organisms, and fortunately they’re wonderfully photogenic too. Lichens grow on rocks, trees, and soil surfaces, and are a symbiosis between a fungus, a photosynthesising partner (green algae and/or cyanobacteria) and a yeast. The bulk of a Lichen’s body is the fungal partner, and accordingly a Canadian lichenologist named Trevor Goward described lichens as "fungi that discovered agriculture". I hope you like Lichens too, as I take photos of them A LOT. If you find yourself wanting to learn more about these amazing microorganisms (and there’s so much more to learn!), do check out the The British Lichen Society to start your inevitable journey into the crazy world of Lichens.
